Nuevo Laredo Consulate Closes for Investigation of Visa Operations
Press Statement Richard Boucher, Spokesman U.S. Department of State Washington, DC January 29, 2003
Temporary Closure of the U.S. Consulate Nuevo Laredo
Today, the State Department has closed the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico in order to conduct a thorough investigation and comprehensive examination of consulate visa operations. The Diplomatic Security Service, in coordination with the Department of Justice and with the close cooperation of the Bureau of Consular Affairs, is investigating allegations that a number of individuals received visas illegally from this consulate.
The visa process plays a critical role in the protection of American borders and maintaining its integrity has always been a top priority for the State Department. We vigorously pursue charges of wrongdoing and take appropriate action against those who are involved. In order to protect the integrity of the U.S. visa and the visa issuance process, we have temporarily closed the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo.
We expect the consulate to reopen in a few days. However, visa operations will remain suspended until we are completely satisfied that all visas are being issued in full accordance of the law. In the meantime, the consulate will continue to provide emergency citizen services.
