Latest Update on TCN Processing in Canada & Mexico

The State Dept. has advised AILA that posts in Canada are cancelling only those existing appointments for third country nationals that would be affected by the new clearance requirements, but that they are honoring other existing appointments. They have also advised that the post at Ciudad Juarez will honor existing appointments, even though it is not scheduling new appointments for third country nationals. It is not clear whether other posts also will honor existing appointments.

Gekas Introduces INS Restructuring Bill

Congressman George W. Gekas (R-Pa.) introduced today new legislation that will overhaul the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). The “Immigration Reform and Accountability Act,” co-authored by Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), will restructure the INS into two separate bureaus.

U.S. Embassy in Yemen Closed

The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa, Yemen, is closed for security reasons at the present time reports the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) approved 163,200 H-1B petitions against the 195,000 cap for Fiscal Year (FY) 2001. At the end of the fiscal year, there were approximately 29,000 petitions pending that if approved, would be recorded against the FY 2002 cap of 195,000.

Periodic Review of Visa Waiver Program Participants Commences

Ths State Department, with the INS, has begun a review of Visa Waiver Program participants as mandated by legislation from October 2000. The first six countries to be reviewed are Argentina, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia and Uruguay.
