Certain Pakistani Consulates Suspend Visa Services
The Department of State has suspended visa services at the Consulates in Peshawar, Lahore and Karachi. The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad is open for all services, including visa services.

President Signs Into Law Affidavit of Support Legislation
The new law amends the INA to allow an affidavit of support from another eligible sponsor if the original sponsor has died if certain requirements are met.
House Passes 245(i) Extension
Last night, March 12, the House of Representatives approved a very narrow extension of Section 245(i) by a vote of 275 to 137.

The House of Representatives will likely vote on the extension of 245(i) legislation this week. It was passed in the Senate on September 6, 2001. President Bush has expressed his support for the bill.

President Bush addressed the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce expressing that he places a high priority on respecting Mexican citizens in the United States. He said, "And one way to do that is to pass 245I, which will allow for families to be reunited."
National Guard Troops to Assist INS At Northern and Southern Borders
Through a cooperative arrangement between the Department of Justice and Department of Defense (DOD), the National Guard will assist the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) on the Northern and Southern borders for up to six months.

SSA: "No Social Security Numbers Solely to Obtain Drivers Licenses"
Effective March 1, 2002, the Social Security Administration will no longer assign Social Security Numbers when the sole reason for needing an SSN is to comply with a State statute that requires an SSN for issuance of a driver's license.
