President Bush Urges Passage of 245(i) Extension
|
In a press release from earlier this week, the President commended the Senate's passage of a bill regarding border security, and urged the Congress to pass a temporary extension of 245(i) to "make America more welcoming."

House Votes to Dismantle U.S. Immigration Agency
|
The House of Representatives voted to separate the enforcement and service parts of the INS into separate bureaus headed by a new assistant attorney general. The House voted 405-9 to pass the measure. The Senate is also currently working on a bill to change the INS.

Senate Approves Border Security and Visa Reforms

The Senate passed the "Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act of 2001" in a 97-0 vote. The House is expected to take it up soon.

INS to Issue Rule Governing Release of Detainee Information

The INS has submitted an interim rule to the Federal Register governing the release of detainee information. Although the rule has not yet even been published (it is expected to appear in the Federal Register on Monday, April 22), an INS News Release dated April 18 declares that the rule took effect on Wednesday, April 17.
