New Form DS-158 Required of all F, M & J Nonimmigrants

As of July 25, 2002, the new Form DS-158 “Contact Information and Work History for Nonimmigrant Visa Applicant” is required of all applicants for an F, M or J visa. It can be found on the Department of State website at http://travel.state.gov/DS-0158.pdf.

Proposed Procedures for Verifying the Identity of Individuals Seeking to Open Financial Accounts

The Treasury Dept., together with seven financial regulators, issued proposed rules that would require financial institutions to establish minimum procedures for identifying and verifying the identity of customers seeking to open financial accounts. 'Non-U.S. persons' would need to provide an identification number from a govt-issued document.

Age-Out Protection Bill Cleared for President’s Signature

California to raise tuition for foreign students
|
University of California regents raised tuition for out-of-state and foreign students on Thursday over objections that the increase might conflict with a policy that gives some illegal immigrants an in-state tuition break.

INS Release Announces Old Mexican BCCs Valid Until 10/1/02
|
WASHINGTON – As part of the Enhanced Border Security Act, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) announced today that the older, non-biometric Mexican Border Crossing Card will be valid until October 1, 2002. Mexican nationals are encouraged to apply as soon as possible for the new biometric BCC, Form DSP-150. The Department of State has issued over five million new cards since April 1998.

Regulation Would Require Financial Institutions to Check IDs

The Treasury Dept. announced proposed regulations to require financial institutions to obtain identification from customers opening new accounts. 'Non-U.S. persons' would need to provide an identification number from a government-issued document. The text of the regulations will be posted to InfoNet when published.

House Subcommittee Member Pushes 245(i) as Patriotic

Rep. Jackson-Lee (D-TX), a member of the House Immigration Subcommittee, stated, "I hope that the Congress will move swiftly to pass 245(i) that will allow immigrants to access legalization and become citizens. This is long overdue. This is legislation that recognizes that we do not equate immigration to terrorism, and it is as patriotic as the legislation that we have just passed today."

President Bush issued an executive order waiving certain requirements for noncitizens serving in the active duty armed services wishing to file for naturalization.

Foreign Physician Waiver Program Extension Approved by House
|
The House of Representatives, on June 25, passed legislation that would renew and extend for another two years the “Conrad State 20” program, which allows states to request waivers of the two-year home residence requirement of INA § 212(e) for certain J–1 physicians who agree to work in medically underserved areas for a period of at least three years.
