DOS Notice on Processing of Nonimmigrant Visas

The public is advised that NIV applications are now subject to a greater degree of scrutiny than prior to Sept. 11, and thus take longer to process. Visa applicants are asked for their understanding, and are advised to expect "substantial delays of six to either weeks or more."

INS Commissioner to Resign

ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT ANNOUNCES IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FIRST PHASE OF THE NATIONAL SECURITY ENTRY-EXIT REGISTRATION SYSTEM

Attorney General John Ashcroft announced that the first phase of the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) will be implemented by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) at selected ports of entry throughout the United States on September 11, 2002.

Government Must Release the Names of Persons Detained in Connection with September 11 Attacks

On August 2, 2002, the District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that the Justice Department must release the names of individuals detained in the September 11 attacks within 15 days of the court's decision. Plaintiffs in this case were twenty-one public interest organizations committed to civil rights, human rights, and civil liberties including both AILA and AILF.

President Signs Age-Out Protection Legislation

President Bush on Tuesday, August 6, signed the Child Status Protection Act. This new law addresses the problem of minor children losing their eligibility for certain immigration benefits as a result of INS processing delays.
