INS Launches On-Line Case Status System
The INS has launched a system for checking the status of a case pending at a Service Center via the internet. It can be found at https://egov.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/cris/jsps/caseStat.jsp. The information provided is the same as can be obtained by calling the “INS Direct” inquiry lines at the Service Centers, but this system provides an alternative means to make an inquiry without worrying about busy signals.

Biometric Border Crossing Cards Required Beginning 10/1/2002
The INS will require the Laser Visa Border Crossing Cards for all Mexican Border Crossers starting October 1, 2002. The new card contain biometric information and over five million of them have been issued. Read on for the INS release.
Five Countries Designated for Special Registration
A Department of Justice notice published in the 9/6/02 Federal Register designates Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan and Syria as countries whose nationals and citizens are subject to the special registration requirements of the final regulation published on August 12, 2002.
