Fed Chair Greenspan on Immigration and Future Economic Growth
|
As reported on ILW.com, on August 27, 2004 the Federal Reserve Bank Chairman, Alan Greenspan, discussed the negative economic impacts of the aging U.S. population and decreases in U.S. fertility rates. Such impacts include potential decreases in economic growth, and future problems with funding the Social Security and Medicare systems. What could offset these negative impacts? "Immigration, if we choose to expand it, could also lessen the decline of the labor force growth in the U.S. [...,] but to fully offset the effects of the decline in fertility, immigration would have to be much larger than almost all current projections assume, " suggested Chairman Greenspan.
