Cooking with an Accent: An Immigration Lawyer’s Cookbook by Mira Mdivani is a one-of-a-kind cookbook that pairs mouthwatering recipes with stories of love, laughter and hardship. Mira’s clients and friends, immigrants and Americans, along with spouses, children and one dog, came over to her house in the summer of 2004 to cook for the book. There was a pharmacologist from Peru, a pastry chef from Mexico, a pianist from Uzbekistan, and a restaurant manager from Kansas (to name a few) cooking, eating, and sharing culinary delights brought from the “old country” to our new homeland, America. A percentage of the book’s purchase price will be donated to two local organizations dedicated to breaking the cycle of domestic violence: HOPE HOUSE shelter for abused women and children and EL CENTRO, INC.’s program for survivors of domestic violence. |
